A well-designed and installed fire alarm system will balance the interests of all concerned parties: AHJ, engineer, architect, FPD, and ultimately the end user/owner of the building being protected.
 

Using NFPA as a guideline, most of your fire and life safety issues can be answered.  In addition, each municipality may have other guidelines to adhere to.  It is important to be candid with your AHJ throughout any project—especially during the submittal process. Often, a phone call with a few well-asked questions at the start of a project can eliminate costly problems at the conclusion of a project.
